Kunal Khanwalkar

Hello, my name is Kunal Khanwalkar and I'm a Software Engineer.

This is me.

And this is my dev portfolio.

I've worked on all sorts of fields namely Backend Services, Cloud Infrastructure, Distributed Systems, Native and Web Applications, Android App development, Scripting and Automation; which is backed by my 5+ Years of Experience in top MNCs.

Outside of work, I have a second full time job of maintaining the Tapri-infrastructure (homelab joke) and spend time with my fellow Teatotallers(TM) working on oblique(TM) project intakes. I implore you to check out my oblique(TM) Business Partner Tapri-stack on Github.

Experience

Amazon — Software Development Engineer

July 2022 — Present

Amazon Fresh India — Warehouse Management & Supply Chain Systems

May 2024 — Present

  • Authored a Principal-reviewed RCA resolving a critical INR 59M accounting discrepancy. Designed and executed a Multi-threaded Python reconciliation script to query ledgers and virtually reverse-transship inventory, coordinating across 5+ organizations. Executed 70k+ inventory mutations row-by-row to guarantee zero-operational downtime, avoiding an INR 1.2M loss.
  • Architected and executed the pilot region migration strategy from eu-west-1 to eu-south-2 for the Liquidation Service. Rewrote legacy CloudFormation to AWS CDK, migrated stateful data via S3 CRR and DynamoDB exports, and utilized traffic switching for zero-downtime migration. Architected async-workflow (SQS/EventBridge) migrations for 2 additional services.
  • Led a Cross-ORG level talk of Region Migration as the Region Migration POC of my ORG.
  • Designed the LLD and Java implementation for 2nd/3rd Level Blind Cycle Count feature across 32 FCs and 400+ stores, unblocking an INR 100M WMS migration. Devised a persistent state-management strategy for short-lived tasks and complex lock-in logic on inventory count. Designed the system to be extensible for N-th level counts and K inventory attributes via configuration changes.
  • Directed monthly ORG-level reviews for on-call health, CI/CD, and infrastructure cost for services owned under my team. Built an AI-powered Python platform automating cross-API data fetching, ticket bucketization, and RCA analysis via AWS SageMaker, reducing report creation time from ~2 days to ~2 hours per month per team, currently adopted ORG wide.
  • Led the team-wide JDK 17 migration (6 services, 11 pipelines), refactoring deprecated reflection and class-loader patterns. Migrated frontend tools from AngularJS to React, utilizing useRef for optimal canvas rendering, and automated manual inventory on-call SOPs via python scripts (saving 2.5 hrs/rotation).
  • Launched 11 XPT nodes and migrated 3 FCs to the new HWMS, delivering INR 143M/m in operating cost savings. Owned the node-launch SOP, coordinating with cross-functional step owners to streamline future rollouts.

Technologies: Java, Coral, Spring Boot, AWS, AI w/ Sagemaker, CDK, React, Python

Alexa Built-In / xApp Platform

July 2022 — April 2024

  • Designed and deployed the Ambient Home (‘Show Mode’) feature for third-party Android tablets using React/TypeScript, C++ and websockets. Architected an extensible settings management framework utilizing the Observer Pattern, enabling dynamic backend setting propagation without native C++ changes and establishing the foundation for all upcoming native features.
  • Led native build-system optimization initiatives reducing developer build times from ~2 hours to ~30 seconds. Overhauled the existing CMake/Make and bash build scripts by supporting incremental compilation of linked libraries. Engineered a unified build script across fragmented platforms (Samsung, LG, Android, etc), deprecating siloed team scripts.
  • Owned the xApp Android platform launch on Android devices, driving Non-Functional Requirements (NFRs) and executing a comprehensive codebase refactor. Reduced memory footprint by 30% and storage usage by 12% by optimizing expensive code paths and removing unused artifacts. Acted as a SME for external team members and took responsibility for maintaining Code Standards for away teams.
  • Authored the Low-Level Design (LLD) for the Channel/Lineup integration on 2023/2024 Samsung TVs. Developed a new Device Abstraction Layer (DAL) API to bridge native partner devices with the Alexa Channel Controller backend service, with architecture reviewed by Principal Engineer and Sr. Solutions Architecture.
  • Led the RCA and production hotfix (v2.3.1) for a critical log-streaming outage during the 2024 Samsung TV launch. Owned the end-to-end deployment, generating dedicated release branches, version-sets, and a new automated AWS CodeCommit CI/CD pipeline to deploy the hotfix binary.
  • Built the foundational load-testing framework in Java for 4 xApp backend services, integrating with internal testing tools to enable rigorous pre-production performance and scalability validation.

Technologies: C++, Java, TypeScript, React, Android, AWS, Linux, CMake, Make

Deloitte — DC Analyst

Jan 2021 — June 2022

  • Worked as a Salesforce Developer on a Salesforce CRM driven Web Application partaking in roles such as Frontend & Backend Web Development, Database Management, and Software Testing.
  • Served as primary developer and technical POC for a Salesforce Vlocity-based customer workflow module. Built the Generic frontend web-component for customer workflow view, reducing estimates by 1.5 days per view.

Technologies: Salesforce CRM, Apex, JavaScript, Aura & LWC Components, Vlocity, Bitbucket
